Tufts Dental School Admission Statistics: Average GPA and DAT Scores

Tufts School of Dental Medicine enrolls a large and diverse class of 210 dental students every year. Out of the thousands of applications Tufts receives, they can accept only a fraction.

When deciding whether you should apply to Tufts, you can better gauge your competitiveness by comparing your stats to the average stats of previously accepted applicants. Compared to national averages for accepted applicants, which is a 3.69 overall GPA and a 3.63 science GPA, Tufts has slightly lower averages, with an average overall GPA of 3.39 and an average science GPA of 3.49 among accepted students.

For DAT scores, the national averages for accepted applicants are 21 Academic Average, 21 Total Science, and 20 PAT. By comparison, Tufts’ accepted student averages are lower: 19 Academic Average, 19 Total Science, and 19 PAT.

Tufts does not have a minimum DAT score requirement for in-state or out-of-state applicants. However, international applicants must score at least a 410 (21 on the two-digit DAT scale) for their application to be considered.

Required Prerequisites for Tufts University School of Dental Medicine

Like many dental schools, Tufts has specific prerequisite coursework and experience requirements that applicants must complete before matriculating.

Applicants must have a total of 70 hours of dental shadowing, with at least 40 hours completed with a general dentist.

Tufts Course Requirements:

• 8 credits of General Biology

• 3 credits of an upper-level Biology course

• 3 credits of Biochemistry

• 8 credits of General Chemistry

• 4 credits of Organic Chemistry

• 8 credits of Physics

• 3 credits of a Humanities/Social Science course

All prerequisites except physics must be completed at a 4-year university. Physics may be taken at a community college. Tufts does not accept Advanced Placement (AP) credits for prerequisite coursework. Laboratory components are required for all prerequisite courses except Biochemistry and the upper-level Biology course.

In regards to letters of recommendations, Tufts requires a minimum of three letters of recommendation: two letters of recommendation from science professors and one letter of recommendation from a dentist. Applicants may substitute a committee letter in place of the science professor letters.

Before matriculating, students must complete a Dean’s Certification of Disciplinary History form and undergo a criminal background check.

Tufts Dental School Acceptance Rate: Applicants vs. Accepted Students

Tufts School of Dental Medicine received a total of 3,799 applications this past cycle. While the chart may make it appear that Tufts favors in-state applicants, Tufts states that it does not give preference based on residency. Instead, they prioritize applicants whose values and professional goals align with the mission of the dental school.

Tuition and Costs at Tufts School of Dental Medicine

When considering dental school, the cost of attendance is a major factor. Tufts’ total cost of attendance is the same for in-state and out-of-state students.

Tufts School of Dental Medicine tuition is $114,168 for year one, $115,701 for year two, $107,956 for year three, and $107,293 for year four.
