NYU College of Dentistry welcomes a big and diverse group of 350 dental students every year. Even though they receive thousands of applications, only a small number are admitted. This means that being part of this large class is a special chance to learn and grow alongside many talented peers!


When deciding whether you should apply to NYU, you can better gauge your competitiveness by comparing your stats to the average stats of previously accepted applicants. Compared to national averages for accepted applicants, which is a 3.69 overall GPA and a 3.63 science GPA, NYU has slightly lower averages, with an average overall GPA of 3.61 and an average science GPA of 3.51 among accepted students.

For DAT scores, the national averages for accepted applicants are 21 Academic Average, 21 Total Science, and 20 PAT. By comparison, NYU accepted student averages are nearly identical: 21 Academic Average, 21 Total Science, and 20.4 PAT.


NYU College of Dentistry does not have a minimum DAT score requirement for in-state or out-of-state applicants. However, your DAT must be within three years of seeking admission.


Required Prerequisites for NYU College of Dentistry


Like many dental schools, NYU has specific prerequisite coursework and experience requirements that applicants must complete before matriculating.

Applicants must have a total of 100 hours of dental shadowing before applying.


NYU Course Requirements:

• 2 semesters of Biology

• 2 semesters of General Chemistry

• 2 semesters of Organic Chemistry

• 2 semesters of Physics

• 2 semesters of English or a writing-intensive courses


One prerequisite course may be taken at a community college, while the rest of the prerequisites are required to be taken at a 4-year university. NYU College of Dentistry does accept Advanced Placement (AP) credit for a single prerequisite course. Laboratory components are strongly recommended for all prerequisite courses except English and writing-intensive courses.


In regards to letters of recommendations, NYU requires a minimum of three letters of recommendation: two letters of recommendation from science professors and one letter of recommendation from a dentist. Applicants may substitute a committee letter in place of the science professor letters.


Before matriculating, students must undergo a criminal background check.

While the chart may make it appear that NYU favors in-state applicants, NYU states that it does not give preference based on residency. Tuition and Costs at NYU College of Dentistry
